With beauty on the rise and more and more girls becoming engaged with contour, full eyebrows, and lipstick trends, makeup companies are looking to create the next most intriguing and innovative makeup products, and that’s just what a Korean beauty company did by making Berrisom Liptint Lipstain. You apply the thick glossy substance to your lips and let it sit for 15 minutes before peeling it off. What it does is the product embeds color pigments to the exterior layer of skin, and you’re left with a color on your lips that looks natural and is supposed to last for 8-12 hours.
After watching many beauty blogger videos on this, I came up with three general conclusions: #1 It just looks painful. If you have chapped or generally unhealthy lips, this could be a painful mistake because the product would rip off bits of tattered skin. #2 As if makeup doesn’t already take us long enough, how time consuming for this one thing! 15 mins!? Lastly, #3 How do you make sure that the color goes on evenly all over your lips? For instance, in beauty guru Huda Kattan’s (@hudabeauty) Instagram video clip of her YouTube tutorial for the product, her end result is her lips being stained the red color she had applied but were darker red in the middle and lighter on the outer rims of her lips. So then what, you have to apply it all over again? Making that 30 minutes? YouTuber Tina Yong had dark red spots along parts of her lips as well and had a hard time peeling it off as it came off in little pieces and “stained her fingers.”
The trend has gone as far as making peel-off eyebrow products that tint your brows. Korean beauty company Etude House has made an eyebrow gel with a gooey consistency to apply to brows and leave on for a minimum of 2 hours – TWO HOURS! They even go as far as recommending keeping it on overnight for a darker result. Because it’s such a thick gloss-like substance, there’s no way of shading your brows. Therefore, it left YouTuber Tina with a square dark shaped brow. You would think that this would pull out your brow hairs, but for Tina, this didn’t happen at all. Although one brow came out darker than the other, the overall color is nice and is good for a lasting look.
My overall consensus of this peel-off trend is that it’s just for fun. I don’t think any of this is realistic for everyday makeup looks as it’s time-consuming and unpredictable. You don’t really have quite the same control over the result as you would with cream and powder makeup and normal lipstick as the stain stays on for up to twelve hours and doesn’t go on very easily, so if you mess up, be prepared. But also get some friends and be prepared for a ton of gooey laughter and experimental fun.
