If the essence of fashion is expression in harmony with function, then winter is probably its kryptonite. Time and time again I hear women complain that down-filled jackets, fumbling gloves and layers of thick socks drag down their sense of style and freshness in winter.
If the essence of fashion is expression in harmony with function, then winter is probably its kryptonite. Time and time again I hear women complain that down-filled jackets, fumbling gloves and layers of thick socks drag down their sense of style and freshness in winter. Dressing with flair and personal attitude can be difficult when surviving the cold and the need to keep from turning blue trumps all else. But where there is a supposed weakness, therein can lie strength! Having a stylish winter may mean crawling your way out of layer upon puffy layer of neutral and into some fresh and inspiring looks. It’s easy to be boring for the sake of survival, but I am here to prove that staying warm definitely does not have to cost you on style. Try on a few of these tips for size and brighten up your winter looks. The weather may be drab, but you don’t have to be!
You don’t have to succumb to a pants and sweater combo for 5 months out of the year. Though it’s easy to throw on this warm uniform on the daily when the days are short and dark, it can bring down my mood just like a cup of instant coffee. It gets the job done but for half the fun. My favorite trend these days for wintertime is a pair of gorgeous thigh high boots finishing off a gorgeous leather mini or quilted skirt. Stuart Weitzman makes the best pair, offering different calf sizes in their flat soled or high-heeled styles. Add a pair of transparent black or patterned tights underneath to add more texture and warmth to the look.
Fall in love with a beautiful parka
Believe it or not, you can fall in love with a parka the way you can fall for a gorgeous pair of peep-toe Manolo Blahnik’s. They may not be as sexy, but there is a parka out there that will make you feel cute and warm, I guarantee it. Look for layers of insulation without the puff and look for something special like a fur-trimmed hood. My favorite parka is the warmest coat in my closet and definitely fashionable. I get compliments on its sleek look and large metal hardware atop layers of thin insulation. While its retail value is upwards of $800, this Elizabeth and James coat is available at Century 21 now at an 89% discount! Steal this now $83.76 look with real raccoon fur trimmed hood ‘here’
Don’t sacrifice your love of vintage
It’s amazing how much a little white can freshen up a drab winter look. I am guilty of pretty much exclusively wearing various shades of black in the wintertime, but a rich and chunky knit that doubles as a scarf, like Olivia Palmero’s above, is exciting and functional. As much as I love a beautiful parka, a blazer cut coat with several different textures and fur add a vintage appeal to a warm look.
Put on some adorable ear muffs
Fortunately, it seems earmuffs are back in style. A more fashionable friend than I met with me this week wearing an adorable fuzzy pair in pale pink and I was in love. This is one trend I can deal with, thanks to the added warmth! Find a faux fur pair in different colors for a little spice. American Apparel has a great style in their trademark variety of colors for under $15. Get one ‘here’
Say it all with a scarf
Scarves are a great way to showcase your personal style in the winter months. Even if all of your clothing is dark, wrapping a colorful scarf around your neck can make life a little more exciting! I prefer a large blanket style to wrap any way I please. The one pictured above is fashionable and warm; made from Australian wool that is known for its fine hand feel. The camel and peniche colored version is on sale at Aritiza for only $42.50. Get it ‘here’
Maximize your badass-ness
I am obsessed with this model’s street look. I never thought I could rock my leather jacket as outerwear during the coldest months, but this style sacrifices nothing. From her chunky knit scarf to her oversized leather jacket with layers of thick warmth, this look is not afraid to be edgy and practical.
It’s clear there are plenty of ways to have fun amongst all of the layers. Don’t be dull this winter and have fun! Share your stylish winter looks with us.
