Ladies, the day has finally come. Never could I ever imagine that sweatpants would be socially acceptable outside of a quick run to the corner bodega for ice cream. While they are more acceptable for little else beyond running errands in Middle America, in places like Tokyo, sweatpants are never even seen outside of the house. I’m not even sure they sell sweatpants there at all.
That’s why when I began to notice sweatpants being worn with intention on the streets of New York, I was beyond intrigued. Was I going crazy or was that woman wearing a cropped fur coat, heels, and slouchy sweatpants? I quickly discovered that not only was what I was seeing real, but it was cute–and definitely a thing!
So yes, ladies, the day has finally arrived where you can take your beloved sweatpants out of the confines of your apartment and parade them in the streets! When you think about it, we have come a long way from pounds of fabric, hoop skirts and corsets. We are lucky enough to live in an age where comfort needn’t suffer for fashion and baggy cotton pants are not only acceptable clothing wear but the latest trend.
However, like all fashion trends, they are not without some general rules and restrictions. This trend is not as simple as throwing on your boyfriend’s Champion sweats and a pair of Aldo booties. No, like fashion looks that are pleasing to the eye, this one is all about volume, proportion, and general swagger.
The most important rules of note are as follows:
- Baggy is good, but not too baggy–or too tight. Your sweatpants should easily move, but you should never be able to stick both of your legs into one pant leg. That’s fair, no?
- The crotch should be dropped. The whole essence of this look is based on structured comfort and a dropped crotch accentuates this idea.
- Slouchiness is key. This also plays into the contained look of comfort. Your sweatpants should not sit high on your waist but rather at the bottom of your hips.
- Ankles should be tight–but chill. You should be able to fit your foot through with ease, but a fitted ankle brings the look together with some sharpness.
So now that it’s clear how to wear sweatpants, the question that now remains is where can one wear them? They are clearly acceptable for the Alexander Wang runway (pictured above), or on Kendall Jenner and Rihanna probably anywhere they wish to go, but what about the rest of us? Can we rock this look to the airport and beyond? I think it’s safe to say that this trend can be worn grabbing coffee or to a casual dinner date and anywhere in between. Hell, in the right style, a lovely silk pair could be worn with a matching blazer, stilettos and a diamond or two and be suitable for a gala. The look can be sporty or chic depending on how you accessorize. Our beloved sweatpants now also come in a variety of fabrications, so the options are endless. From leather to silk, cotton, or even wool, sweatpants are officially the pants of dreams.
Now that we know all there is to know about this fantastic trend, where can we buy them? As much as I would love to get my hands on these leather Herve Leger leather ones…
I’m better off with these fab pink leather sweats available at Asos for only $31! Get them for yourself “here”
So, what do you think of this trend? Love it or hate it? I don’t know about you, but I’ll never be able to look at any of my other pants the same. There is no looking back.
