How The American Diet Is Killing Us

The latest statistics show us that Americans are unhealthier now than ever before. Diabetes, Cancer and Heart Conditions are off the charts, and they only seem to be getting worse.

The latest statistics show us that Americans are unhealthier now than ever before. Diabetes, Cancer and Heart Conditions are off the charts, and they only seem to be getting worse. More and more children are now being diagnosed with diabetes 2, and at this rate, the current generation will have a shorter lifespan than their parents.

Let’s take a look at what’s been happening to cause this. Currently, over 2/3 of Americans are overweight. Since 1980, the percentage of obese individuals has doubled. We are currently experiencing an epidemic which can be primarily attributed to diet. The typical American solution to any health problem we might be experiencing is to develop a pill. You’re depressed – take a pill. You’re having sexual problems – take a pill. You have a pain in your back – take a pill. Need I go further? But when it comes to being overweight, there are over 20 genes involved in the process of weight control. It is almost impossible to develop a pill that will take care of this problem. And don’t think that laboratories all over this nation are continually trying to develop that pill.

However, we don’t need a pill. We can change the current situation if we change our diet. The problem with changing our diet and giving up the key culprits that cause weight gain is that the political and economic forces that keep us engaging in high calorie, high fat, and high sugar foods have a powerful influence over the market.

The only practical solution for losing weight and regaining our health is by adapting a whole food, plant-based diet, along with a regular exercise regimen. The Standard American diet now consists of 70% meat and dairy, 7% fruit and vegetables, and 20% starch (grains, legumes, corn, and potatoes). If you can cut back on the meat and dairy by substituting more starch and vegetables, you will begin to feel the effects of a healthy diet. It’s always a good idea to get your doctor’s approval before you change your diet, but you might run into difficulty.

Doctors are part of this culture and they receive the same messages from the powerful lobbies that the rest of us receive. The message is that the more protein (i.e. animal products) we eat, the better our chances for a healthy outcome. But our protein levels are much too high and we can actually get everything we need from plants. Yes, I know it’s difficult giving up bacon and pizza and cheeseburgers, but you don’t have to be drastic. Go slowly – eliminate animal protein one day a week and cut back to using meat only as a condiment rather than the main portion of the meal.

We now have research supporting the fact that diabetes, cancer and heart conditions – all considered to be “diseases of affluence,” do not exist in every country. Parts of China report 0 cancer and 0 heart disease. Seventh Day Adventists, who eat a vegetarian diet, also have been studied and they report from 60 to 75% lower cancer rates than the general population. That’s quite an awesome finding!

The same solution that will benefit you will also benefit the environment. Our planet is in crisis and so are we. You can help heal the world as you help heal yourself. If that’s not a powerful incentive, I don’t know what is.
