Every year in the Southern California desert known as the Coachella Valley, there is a huge festival called Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival – or simply “Coachella” to those in the know. This year, the festival takes place over two three-day weekends, April 15-17 and April 22-24, with each having an identical line-up. The Saturday night headliner this year is the group Guns N’ Roses.

The Coachella Festival’s origins began back in 1993 with a concert that Pearl Jam performed at the Empire Polo Club. The first official Coachella Festival was held for two days in October 1999, which came after the failed Woodstock ’99. Coachella wasn’t held in 2000 but then was revived in April 2001 as only a one-day event. In 2002, it was a two-day event and then three days in 2007. A second weekend was added in 2012. Coachella follows the Burning Man and Stagecoach festivals.

Many artists have used this festival as a platform to show off their art exhibits which include art installations or sculptures. Many celebrities have fled to the festival not only to make a statement but to enjoy every genre of music. The genres included range from pop, rock, alternative to hip hop. Many great artists and musicians have either been discovered or used this venue to please their fans. Artists such as Madonna, Outcast, Blur, AC/DC and Snoop Dogg have performed on each of their main stages.

Many of these artists have been reunited after decades apart such as the headliner for this year, Guns N’ Roses. Despite guitarist Slash and lead singer Axl Rose’s falling out, they are coming together to play once more. The press coverage is enormous. In the early days of Coachella, the press focused more on the looting, arson, and violence. This is still on the conscience of organizers who have tightened security.

Organizers aim to provide a wonderful experience, offering food and refreshments but are still not able to provide enough shade for the concertgoers, who prefer to watch concerts at night. It usually reaches 100 degrees in the desert during the day. The lineup this year is rather impressive and can be found on the festival website www.coachella.com

Despite being popular with hipsters young and old, Coachella’s setting is the Empire Polo Club, which offer a spacious and clean concert venue. This year, droves and droves of millennials will be focusing on dancing, listening to their favorite bands, and having a great time.  The festival poses as a place for politically adventurous bands to take their first stance, such as Pearl Jam who is considered 90’s royalty and advocates for peace and love.

Not since the 60’s with Woodstock has there been such an original music festival where people of all diversities come together and have head-turning lineups and artists. This year is expected to set records and can be seen live by livestreaming on YouTube.
